Image Compression vs Resizing
Learn when compression, resizing, or both can reduce an image file size.
Compression and resizing are often mentioned together, but they are different operations.
| Operation | What changes? | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Encoding and image information | Smaller file with similar dimensions |
| Resizing | Pixel dimensions | Fewer pixels and often a much smaller file |
When to resize
Resize when the destination does not need the original pixel dimensions. A 4000-pixel-wide photo may not need to be delivered at that size for a small webpage image.
When to compress
Compress when the dimensions are appropriate but the encoded file is still larger than necessary.
When to use both
For a large photo destined for a small web card or email, resizing first and compressing second is often more effective than relying on quality reduction alone. The two operations solve different parts of the file-size problem.
