GUIDE
Why Are iPhone Photos HEIC?
Why iPhone cameras use HEIC, what the benefits are, and when conversion is useful.
Recent iPhones commonly save photographs as HEIC/HEIF because the format can store high-quality images efficiently. This can reduce storage use, but it can also create compatibility issues outside supported Apple and modern software workflows.
Why not use JPG for everything?
JPG is extremely compatible, but it can require more storage at comparable visual quality. Apple can therefore choose a more efficient format for supported workflows.
When should you use JPG?
Use JPG when a website, email recipient, document editor or older application asks for it or fails to accept HEIC.
Can you keep both?
Yes. Keeping the original HEIC and creating JPG copies for specific destinations gives you flexibility without replacing the original.
Why conversion is sometimes necessary
The reason to convert is usually the destination, not the phone. If a website accepts JPG but rejects HEIC, create a JPG copy for that upload and keep the original HEIC in your photo library.
